As a fundraising initiative for the Chemistry Olympiad exams, the Chemistry Olympiad of Sri Lanka organized a workshop that aimed to equip students with invaluable skills in qualitative inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry. This event took place in the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon in Rajagiriya and was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Kushan Weerasiri and Mr. Jaliya Ranaweera, both committee members of the Chemistry Olympiad Sri Lanka.
Students and teachers all around the country participated in this workshop. The demonstrations were done in both English and Sinhala medium ensuring that language barriers were not an obstacle to learning. The demonstrations were done by the teaching assistants of ICHEM. A key highlight of the workshop was the opportunity for hands-on chemistry experiments. Over the course of four intensive hours, students were led through eight practical exercises which were important for the A/L Chemistry examination in the organic and inorganic chemistry areas. The success of this workshop extended beyond the physical confines of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Dr. Upul Kumarasinghe, Dr. Chinthaka Nadun Ratnaweera, and Mr. Jaliya Ratnaweera – all esteemed members of the Chemistry Olympiad of Sri Lanka – Zoom sessions with practical discussions were done.
At the event’s conclusion, all participants were presented with well-deserved participation certificates. Dr. Kushan Weerasiri had the honor of presenting these certificates. These certificates were not just pieces of paper; they symbolized the dedication and hard work that each participant had invested.
In conclusion, the Chemistry Olympiad of Sri Lanka’s workshop was not just an event; it was a celebration of chemistry, a testament to dedication, and a promise of a brighter future for the world of science.
