Preliminary Round of the Sri Lanka National Chemistry Olympiad (SLNChO) and Sri Lanka Junior Chemistry Olympiad Competition– 2025

The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC) annually conducts the Sri Lanka National Chemistry Olympiad (SLNChO) competition to recognize the talented students in Chemistry and select the best four students to represent Sri Lanka in the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). From this year IChemC has introduced the Sri Lanka Junior Chemistry Olympiad competition for G.C.E (Ordinary level) students. National level winners will receive medals, certificates, monetary awards and scholarships to study a chemistry degree at the IChemC.

Both examinations are scheduled to be held on Saturday, 25th January 2025 at island-wide centers.

Advanced Topic discussion for the National and Junior Olympiad will be held in the first week of January. (The date will be announced)

The deadline for applications is Tuesday, 31st December 2024. (Extended Deadline)

Details of the two competitions are given below.

Sri Lanka National Chemistry Olympiad – Preliminary Round

  • Duration: two hours and 30 minutes
  • Medium: Sinhala, Tamil and English
  • Mode: MCQ questions
  • Syllabus: The first Units: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ,7, 8, 9 of the Advanced Level Chemistry syllabus and some advanced topics. Study materials and videos related to the advanced topics will be shared to the registered students through a Google Classroom link prior to the exam.
  • Final Round- The top 30-35 students will be selected to the final round of SLNCO.
  • Eligibility: Sri Lankan citizen, Students currently studying for Advanced level (Local or UK) & those who sit for the G.C.E. (A/L) in 2024 for the first time.
  • Age criteria for International Chemistry Olympiad participation: below 20 years of age as of 1st July 2025
  • If you are 20 years or older before the 1st July 2025, you may still take part in the Sri Lanka National Chemistry Olympiad, however you will not be able to represent Sri Lanka in the International Chemistry Olympiad.
  • Registration fee: Rs 800/=

The Sri Lanka National Junior Chemistry Olympiad – 2025

  • Duration: One hour and 30 minutes
  • Medium: Sinhala, Tamil and English
  • Mode: MCQ questions
  • Syllabus: G.C.E.(O/L) Science Syllabus
  • Eligibility: Sri Lankan citizen, below 17 years of age as of 31st January 2025
  • Registration fee: Rs. 500/=

Any number of students can participate from a school for both competitions and those who are interested in participating should fill in the online application form at http://www.web.ichemc.edu.lk/cosl/. The original of the bank slip must be emailed or sent by post indicating the following on the slip on or before 20th December 2024.
